From the Greek ὄνυξ, meaning "claw" or "fingernail". Throughout history, Onyx it has been used by skilled craftsman as they created breathtakingly detailed carvings to then be setted on rings. This technique was popular in the Victorian era, where the opaque shine of black onyx was also the most used in traditional mourning jewellery.
